UCI Francisco J. Ayala School of Biological Sciences proudly presents The Howard A. Schneiderman Memorial Bioethics Lecture Series
“Pregnant Women and the Medical-Legal Divide”
Presented by Michelle Bratcher Goodwin, J.D., LL.M.
Everett Fraser Chair in Law & Professor of Medicine and Public Health
University of Minnesota
Abstract: Professor Goodwin’s lecture addresses the intersections of bioethics and the criminal justice system by exploring how state statutes play an increasing role in shaping pregnant women’s autonomy, privacy, and liberty. Her lecture highlights how arrests, forced bed-rests, compelled cesarean operations, civil incarceration, and mandatory life-support imposed against pregnant women raise important issues for bioethics and law. Among the issues considered in the lecture are the roles of physicians; the conflicts of interest between physicians and pregnant patients; maternal-fetal conflicts; and promoting healthy pregnancies.
