María Félix

María Félix was a Mexican singer and actress. She was known for her beauty, strong personality, and her taste for finesse. She turned down multiple films in Hollywood, and some speculate that this actually helped her career. Throughout her career, she starred in 47 films made in Mexico, Spain, France, Italy, and Argentina. She was nicknamed La Doña for her role in the movie Doña Bárbara, a film in which the lead female role was already cast until the director met Félix.

Though we admire Félix for her strong personality, it was not always championed during her lifetime. She is quoted as saying “With these films, I became the number one enemy of the Mexican family morals…Somehow, I seduced the public, even those who criticize the conduct of my characters in the films. My legend began to take shape without moving a finger. The public imagination did everything for me.” When Félix wore pants to her third husband’s funeral, there was such a scandal that Félix left the country for Europe.

This month we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite women throughout history. Who would you like us to talk about?

As part of celebrating Women's History Month, we are trying to be sure that we can support our endorsed candidates the best we can. You can help us do this and get more women elected by becoming a member and making a contribution to our PAC. Your money helps us financially support our candidates' campaign and ensures we see more progressive, pro-choice women in office.
