Nefertiti

Our next notable woman from history is a personal favorite of this author. Nefertiti, or Neferneferuaten Nefertiti, was the ChiGreat Royal Wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten, later known as the Heretic Pharaoh. Nefertiti and her husband brought about a religious revolution to Ancient Egypt by elevating one god above the others (Aten). Both were largely erased from history, therefore little is known about their lives.

Many scholars believe that Nefertiti was given the title co-regent by her husband. If she did take on the title Pharaoh, she would have been one of less than 10 women who ever held that title. Images exist of Nefertiti smiting enemies, which was a role that was exclusively for Pharaohs, not royal wives.

Though people attempted to erase them from history, elements of Nefertiti’s life live on today. Her bust is one of the most recognizable images and is a fashion and beauty icon to this day.

This month we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite women throughout history. Who would you like us to talk about?

As part of celebrating Women's History Month, we are trying to be sure that we can support our endorsed candidates the best we can. You can help us do this and get more women elected by becoming a member and making a contribution to our PAC. Your money helps us financially support our candidates' campaign and ensures we see more progressive, pro-choice women in office.
